Cemu lets you play Wii U games on your PC in 4K (2024)

That does mean that the Cemu method is likely one for perhaps only the most dedicated players to pursue. Each title would need individual tweaking to get the best effect, and the overall quality of experience isn't guaranteed - Cemu says in its FAQ "it's not unusual that games and applications just don't work". YouTuber 'reznoire' has captured several games running in emulated 4K though, and the difference is pretty stunning. Note that you will need a 4K-capable screen to appreciate those videos at full resolution.

The public release for Cemu 1.7.0 and the graphics packs is set for January 16 - shortly after Nintendo itself reveals its next home console, the Nintendo Switch. Details have been scarce on the specifications of the new home/handheld hybrid hardware, with rumours that it may only render games at 720p when used as a tablet, possibly boosting to 1080p when docked for television play.

We'll know more tomorrow, when Nintendo officially reveals Switch details, but for now, Cemu may be the only (questionably legal) way to see Nintendo favourites in 4K quality.
