What is a Bullet Journal

A bullet journal, or BUJO, is really just a fancy name for a planner or organizer. The main different between a bullet journal and a planner, is that a planner is typically already set up a certain way. With a bullet journal, the pages are blank except for dots or lines. These guides will help you line things up and keep them straight.

I’m using the dotted bullet journal.

You create your own format and layouts for your bullet journal. Therefore, every BUJO is different and unique. Sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it?

Why You Should Start a Bullet Journal

There are many ways a bullet journal can be beneficial to you. Not only is a good organizational tool, but it also helps you keep everything in one location. Plus, with a bullet journal, you’re in control of how it is organized and laid out.

Here are some examples of how a bullet journal can help you:

  • Organize areas of your life
  • Track progress
  • Hold your thoughts (brain dump)
  • Keep track of events or appointments
  • Express your creativity
  • Track your moods

Easy Doodle Art Step by Step

An introduction page to the current year is typically found at the beginning of all bullet journals. You can design this page any way you would like. This seemed like the perfect place for a fun little doodle.

Start by drawing out your numbers using a pencil. This step is optional. You can just use a marker instead of sketching it out with a pencil first. It really just depends on your level of confidence. If you’re not comfortable skipping the pencil sketch ,don’t worry about it. You need to develop of process for making your doodle art that feels comfortable and relaxing.

Art should feel fun.

If you have a lot of different markers, like I do, you might want to test them out to see which ones you like the best. For the main lines of my 2019, I liked how the black Prismacolor marker wrote.

Next, trace over your pencil lines and clean up the numbers with a pink pearl eraser. It’s ok if you’re numbers aren’t perfect. Art doesn’t have to be perfect, it has to be enjoyable.

Now use a different marker to draw a line around each of the numbers. I used a Dixon Redi Sharp marker because I like how dark it is, and I thought it complimented the other marker nicely. I’m using black for my drawing, but you can you a different color if you’d like. This is a perfect opportunity to experiment with different colors and styles.

Doodle Art Flowers

Now comes the fun part, adding the doodles. You can decorate your page any way you like. There is no right or wrong way to do this. It’s a matter of personal preference.

I started my easy doodle art by adding in a vine with some small flowers in it. For these drawings I used a black fineliner marker. Again, use a pencil to draw it out first if it helps you feel more relaxed.

Now add in some larger doodle art flowers. When adding your doodles, keep in mind that nothing has to be perfect. This should be relaxing and enjoyable. Don’t get stressed out about the details.

Notice how part of the flowers are hidden behind the numbers. This helps make them look like they’re part of the overall design. You can draw your flower doodles wherever you think looks good. And, you can draw as few or as many as you want.

You could also try drawing them in color, and make them different sizes.

The vines looked funny to me, so I continued them onto the other side of the numbers. Since doing that, I’m much happier with how it’s starting to look.

Continue adding in more vines, flowers, and little doodles. To keep your composition looking more uniform, repeat patterns and designs throughout your drawing. You want your doodle art to look balanced. If you look at your drawing and it doesn’t “feel” balanced, then you probably need to add something to your doodle.

Easy Doodle Art with Color Accents

After completing all my doodle art, I decided I didn’t care for it being black and white. So, I grabbed my pink Sharpie highlighter and added some color around the numbers. You can add in as much color as you want. You could color in part, or all, of your flower doodles. Or, add in some color to your background if you want.

Just do whatever you think might look good.

Fear of failure is the one thing that keeps us from doing something, more than anything else. Every drawing you do is a step in the right direction. You can’t grow as an artist unless you try new things and continue to practice. Don’t let fear hold you back.

And easy doodle art is a great place to start.
