Overview

This article will walk you through finding the IP address of the network adapter on a computer without using the command prompt on Windows 7, Vista, XP and Mac OS X.

Symptoms

  • unable to locate IP address
  • not able to find IP address

Steps

Windows:

To find the IP address on Windows 10, without using the command prompt:

  • Click the Start icon and select Settings.
  • Click the Network & Internet icon.
  • To view the IP address of a wired connection, select Ethernet on the left menu pane and select your network connection, your IP address will appear next to "IPv4 Address".
  • To view the IP address of a wireless connection, select WiFi on the left menu pane and click Advanced Options, your IP address will appear next to "IPv4 Address".

To find theIP address on Windows 8/8.1, without using the command prompt:

  • In the system tray, click the network connection icon and select Open Network and Sharing Center.
  • To view the IP address of a wired connection, double-click Local Area Connection and click Details, your IP address will appear next to "IPv4 Address".
  • To view the IP address of a wireless adapter, double-click Wireless Network Connection (Network Name)and click Details your IP address will appear next to "IPv4 Address".

To find theIP address on Windows 7, without using the command prompt:

  • In the system tray, click the network connection icon and select Open Network and Sharing Center.
  • To view the IP address of a wired connection, double-click Local Area Connection and click Details, your IP address will appear next to "IPv4 Address".
  • To view the IP address of a wireless adapter, double-click Wireless Network Connection (Network Name)and click Details your IP address will appear next to "IPv4 Address".

To find IP address on Windows Vista, without using the command prompt:

  • From the Start menu, right-click Network, and then select Properties. This opens the Network and Sharing Center.
  • To view the IP address of a wired connection, click View Status to the right of Local Area Connection and click Details, then look for the address next to "IPv4 IP Address"
  • To view the IP address of a wireless adapter, click View Status to the right ofWireless Network Connection and click Details then look for the address next to "IPv4 IP Address".

To find the IP address onWindows XP, without using the command prompt:

  • From the Start menu, right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties.
  • To view the IP address of a wired connection, double-click Local Area Connection and click the Support tab, then click Details and the window that appears will display the IP address.
  • To view the IP address of a wireless adapter, double-click Wireless Network Connection and click the Support tab, then click Details and the window that appears will display the IP address.

Mac OS X:

To find the IP address on Mac OS X 10.5 and later computer:

  • From the Apple menu, select System Preferences... in System Preferences, from the View menu, select Network.
  • In the Network Preferences window, click a network port (e.g., Ethernet, AirPort, Wi-Fi). If you are connected, you'll see its IP address under "Status:".

To find the IP address on Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.3 computer:

  • From the Apple menu, select Location, and then Network Preferences....
  • In the Network Preferences window, next to "Show:", select Network Status. You'll see your network status and your IP address displayed.
