Grand Vitara nameplate re-enters the market after a 7-year absence; Bookings open for the new SUV at Rs 11,000
Maruti Suzukiin its latest media communication has confirmed that its upcomingmid-size SUVwill be called theGrand Vitara. The company has opened bookings for the compact SUV at a token amount of Rs 11,000 and will offer the vehicle through itsNEXA dealerships. First introduced back in 2009, the nameplate has adorned Maruti’s most expensive SUV for over a decade. During its brief stint in the Indian market, the Grand Vitara SUV failed to attract customers due to its expensive price tag and the image associated with the company.

Like its 2015 counterpart, the New Grand Vitara will measure over 4-metres in length but will have a smaller wheelbase of around 2500mm. Unlike the old car which had a mammoth engine, the new car will be powered by two 1.5-litre petrol engines, one with mild hybrid set-up and the other with strong hybrid setup. The vehicle will be among the most fuel-efficient SUVs in its segment.
Unlike the old model that was available with both FWD and 4X4 configuration, the new one will be available in FWD and AWD configurations only. In terms of exterior design, the new vehicle will be a stark contrast from the old with flowing lines and a curvy body.
On the inside, the old Grand Vitara was let down by its dated interior that lacked features and tech. But the new car will come with a whole host of technology and feature upgrades that not only make the four-wheeler appealing to all but also will justify its expensive price tag.
