It seems that Netflix really has taken over the world – with the exception of four countries.
The hugely popular streaming service – which has given the world the likes of Orange Is The New Black and House Of Cards along the way – has just launched in an additional 130 countries, meaning that it’s pretty much available anywhere.
However there are still four places in the world that remain Netflix-free – and they are China, North Korea, Syria and Crimea.
While North Korea, Syria and Crimea are subject to what was described as ‘US government restrictions’, in the case of China the company needs to get permission from their government, which has strict rules when it comes to online censorship.
So no Netflix and Chill for them then. At least not for the time being.
Speaking at the launch, Netflix founder Reed Hastings announced: ‘Today you are witnessing the birth of a new global Internet TV network.
‘With this launch, consumers around the world, from Singapore to St. Petersburg, from San Francisco to Sao Paulo, will be able to enjoy TV shows and movies simultaneously – no more waiting.’
He added that they hoped to launch in China in the future.
Prior to Wednesday’s launch Netflix was available in 60 territories, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
The company plans to release around 31 original series in 2016, in addition to original features, documentaries and childrens’ shows.
Hastings revealed that they are also working on removing content restrictions so that the same films and TV shows are available in every country at the same time.
