Thermostat Loses WiFi Connection Often

Most computers do not stay connected to a wireless network as long as a thermostat does. It is not uncommon for a thermostat to temporarily lose its connection with a wireless network from time to time.

Like most WiFi-enabled devices, the thermostat is designed to automatically reconnect to the network. Some of the most common issues that can affect the thermostat's ability to connect to the wireless network are:

• The range between the thermostat and the wireless access point/router -30 ft. max is recommended
• Router firmware compatibility
• WiFi channel crowding

Checking Signal Strength

1. From the main screen, press Menu→System Infoand then press About on the left-hand side. The page up/down buttons will then appear on the right.

2. Press the down arrow to Page 2 of 4 and verify the WiFi signal strength.

3. Troubleshoot according to Signal Strength.
   
   • • If Signal Strength is less than 80%:
       80% or higher signal strength is recommended. Lower signal strength can cause slow responses between the Trane® Home application and the thermostat, frequent disconnections, or disconnections for long periods.

       • Relocate the router after the thermostat is installed.
       • Add a WiFi access point closer to the thermostat or install a WiFi range extender.
       • Run an Ethernet cable between the thermostat and the router (CAT 5 or better with an RJ-45 connector)
       • If Signal Strength is greater than 80%:
         WiFi performance or configuration issues can cause disconnections even if the signal strength is above the recommended 80%.
         
         Troubleshooting

         • Power cycle the router and then the thermostat (click here for thermostat reboot instructions). In the case of corrupted firmware, this will force an update (if needed) and often resolves the connection problem.
         • Check with the router and thermostat manufacturer for firmware updates, then update as suggested.
         • Using a WiFi troubleshooting tool like WiFi Analyzer, verify that the channels surrounding WiFi networks are on.
           • If other networks are using the same channel, move the thermostat to a less-populated channel. It will likely involve logging into your router via your browser or the router's app (where applicable) and changing a setting.
           • Please refer to the documentation for your router, or contact your ISP or router manufacturer for instructions on changing the channel.
