Once you pass the exam with 70% and higher score, you are now eligible and “on the list”. But are you reachable?
“Reachable” means you are in the top three ranks in the eligibility list. The eligibility list places candidates into different ranks based on their exam score. All candidates with the same score are in the same rank. For most classifications, only the candidates in the top three ranks (1,2,3) are “reachable” and may be considered for employment/appointment.
How to Check If You Are Reachable
To check if you are reachable, go to Eligible List Disclosure page on CalCareers website.
Unless you are only interested in a specific department, leave the department name “All Departments.” Select a classification that you took the exam for. Lastly, choose “Servicewide Open” for List Type.
When you hit “Search,” it returns the following search results.
Click the Eligible List number.
This list tells you the following:
- People in Rank 1 have scored 95% in the exam. (NOTE: VET stands for Veterans. Applicants who are veterans receive advantages and get placed in Rank 1.)
- People in Rank 2 have scored 90% in the exam.
- People in Rank 3 have scored 85% in the exam.
- In order to be “reachable,” you must score 85% and above.
You might be concerned if you’re in Rank 3, and you see 8,387 people in higher ranks. Do not fret. As long as you are within the top three ranks, it doesn’t matter which rank you are in. Rank 3 is just as reachable as Rank 1.
But if you are below Rank 3, you will have to re-take the exam to obtain reachable rank. Thus, it might not be a bad idea to check the eligibility list prior to taking the exam to find out the minimum score you need to achieve. If Rank 3 on the current list is 85%, you have to make sure you score at least 85% to avoid taking the exam multiple times.
