- A lot of us have some wild ideas,about how Instagramworks and it's probably,because we're confusedwhy the app's arranged,in certain ways.,Like why is one person in myfeed first versus someone else?,Or, more crucially, why is my crush always,at the top of my story viewers?,Is it because they're stalking my page?,Here's what I know.,Instagram has one billionusers, including myself,,and the app hasn't been super forthcoming,about how its algorithm works.,The company treats it likeit's the Coca-Cola recipe,or something, even aNew York Times article,mentioned the stalker idea.,So how does Instagramrank people in stories,and in the app in general?,Does it actually show me thepeople who stalk me the most?,We went to Instagram to find out.,(medium-paced jazz music),That's Julian Gutman, product lead,for Instagram home, which includes,Instagram stories and the feed.,First things first, let'saddress the stalker myth.,- So the answer is,the people that show up,on that list are not thepeople that stalk you the most.,It's actually based on your activity,and people that you're closest to.,- All right, you heard that.,Instagram isn't going to show you,who's stalking you the most.,Instead, it's the peopleyou're interacting with.,So if you go to your crush's page,or even your frenemy's page all the time,,it's likely they're going to show up,at the top of your story viewers.,- I think there are oftenthese kind of situations,where there are a lotof confounding factors.,But you can kind of createa narrative around it,,maybe based on what you wanna think,or sort of what's interesting to you.,- It's totally possible thatI'm projecting a narrative,onto my story viewers because,I'm actually the one stalking them.,Although I have to say I don'tthink I'm creeping that much,,so what else am I doing in the app,that makes Instagram thinkI care about these people?,- Do you visit their profile?,Do you like their feed posts?,Do you comment on their feed posts?,Do you view their stories?,- But Julian wouldn't get specific,about how certain interactionsare weighted in the app.,Like whether a like is less significant,than a DM or a comment.,Or what happens if a DM isopened but not responded to?,How does that affect the algorithm?,Even what you do outside theapp can affect your feed.,Like who you're connectedto on Instagram's,parent company, Facebook.,Even still, I sometimes have random people,in my story viewerslist that I barely know.,- Do you check the list multiple times?,If you check the list multiple times,it tries to show you a new set of people.,So it's trying to give you new information,every time you check the list.,- So if you're like me,and you check your story,multiple times after you first post it,,you're probably going to see new people,at the top of yourviewers because Instagram,always wants you to have a new experience,when you open the app.,This whole strategy around showing,you relevant, interestingcontent led the company,to change its feed fromchronological to algorithmic.,When this happened in 2016, Instagram said,people were missing 70%of posts in their feed,,so it wanted to optimizethe 30% they did see.,Facebook's feed works the same way.,The algorithm's everywhere.,When that switch happened two years ago,,it was super controversial,but I actually like it.,The feed works as it'ssupposed to most of the time,,my best friend's postspopulate at the top of my feed,,although because Instagram always wants,to show me new content,it sometimes refreshes,too quickly and I don'thave a chance to scroll.,Okay, so I'm starting to understand,why I see certain people incertain places on the app,,even though Julian wouldn'tget super granular.,He's guarding that algorithm.,Ultimately, it comes down to self-control.,Everything we do on theapp molds the algorithm.,So maybe I shouldn't look at,my random Tinder date's profile.,I'd rather have my bestfriends at the top of my feed.,Resist the boy click.,If I were to guess why this myth exists,,it's probably because deep down,,we know that who we lookat and stalk on Instagram,says a lot about ourpriorities and interests.,I don't want to admit thatI look at my ex's profile,,but Instagram knows all our secrets.,Our interactions don't lie.,I just hope the app never actually exposes,my stalking habits.,Hey, thanks for watching.,If you haven't subscribed to The Verge yet,you should do that, and then you should,go check out our sister site, Eater.,They publish a series calledthe Kitchen Gadget Test Show,,which involves testinggadgets in the kitchen.,What could be better?

best way to identify your stalkers,on instagram,is by looking at who's viewed your,instagram stories,i want to take a moment to go over the,background of how this process works so,you guys can better understand,what that list actually means you see,instagram is focused on keeping your,attention on their platform it's how,they make their money,to do that they have a sort of ranking,system which ranks your interaction with,different people's content,in order to see which accounts you like,the most now this is nothing special,although it is very pertinent to your,instagram profile,it dictates who shows up at the top of,your feed which stories will appear,first,and the kind of content that you'll see,on the explore page however this is,nothing too special because it ranks,your interest with other accounts other,accounts aren't going to be able to see,this ranking because it is basically,only on your end that it's going to,matter,now with that understood there is one,exception to what i just said,and that is the views list on instagram,stories,you see normally when you look at the,likes of your posts or your feed it's,you're going to be seeing,your ranking system or at least your,relation to those accounts,however when you look at the views on,your instagram story that is,those accounts relation to you this is,why instagram stories are such a great,diagnostic tool for seeing who is,viewing your profile,it's going to rank the accounts relative,to one another,to see which ones interact with you the,most and is going to put those at the,top of the list,this way when you see the top of your,list and it has somebody that you don't,really recognize,it's a good chance that person is more,interested in you than you may have,thought,okay maybe i should qualify what i just,said if you see someone towards the top,of your views list on your story and you,don't recognize them,don't immediately assume that they're,just some creepy stalker looking at your,profile,there are so many different confounding,variables that play into the order of,this list,for starters it depends on how many,accounts those people are interacting,with,like let me paint you all a picture,let's say that there are two accounts,one account only follows two people and,spends equal amount of time,under each account now let's say we have,another account that follows,ten thousand accounts but spends twenty,percent of its time,looking at one profile in the order of,the views list,the person who spends fifty 50 of the,time even though they only follow two,accounts,is going to show up higher than the,person who spends 20 of the time,but they follow 10 000 accounts as you,can see it's not an accurate picture of,what's going on,because the person who's following 10,000 accounts that spends 20,of their time under your profile is,probably more likely a stalker than the,person who only follows two accounts and,spends half the time on your profile,another thing important to consider as,well is that instagram's algorithm,might influence the profiles that you,look at take for example that you are,clicking through stories and you spent a,long time on someone's story,unexpectedly for no particular reason,instagram's algorithm is going to notice,this and put their story towards the,front of your stories list,then let's say you click on that story,again by chance because it was promoted,towards the top of the stories that you,can see,instagram is going to say wow you really,like this person when in reality you may,or may not even know this person,instagram's algorithm that way is sort,of artificially influencing the accounts,that you look at the most,so why does this matter well let's take,a look at that in the reverse context,now that random person who you don't,really care about their content nor you,really know,you're going to show up at the top of,their list under the viewers on their,story,making you look like a stalker when,reality it's just instagram algorithm,playing with who shows up first on the,list,and finally i want to spend the last few,minutes talking about some common sense,when trying to figure out who your,stalkers are on instagram,using the instagram story list is not an,end-all

that you,like and you don't want them to know hey,they're creeping on me well you're gonna,get all the answers in this video so,let's get into it so to preface this my,name is jake i'm an instagram people,who actually stalk your instagram,profile the most are the people that,interact with your profile the most and,while,that is true to some extent let's get,into a little experiment that was run by,some people on reddit,so let's start this off by going into,those third-party applications that you,might download that tell you hey here,are your instagram stalkers and hey here,are the people who view your instagram,profile,and stories the most are real well those,those applications aren't real,whatsoever they're completely fake,because,instagram doesn't even give you that,information why would they give,a third-party company that distinct,information,so there are some theories to actually,test this out and a couple people on,reddit decided to actually run an,experiment,and what they did was they created a,brand new instagram account,and what they did with that brand new,instagram account was viewed their other,friends account,and interacted with that account they,didn't do anything else the the other,person whose account they're viewing did,not interact back or else it would ruin,the experiment to see,if that is actually somebody who's,stalking their account because if one,person is not interacting with the other,side then that means that it's just a,loyal follower and then you can see,who's actually like,stalking your profile so let's get into,this experiment that they ran on reddit,so i tried a little experiment with a,friend of mine,said one reddit user in fact for a few,days i visited,his profile a lot each day and i told,him not to visit my profile,at all after i did this for almost a,week,my friend uploaded a story and guess who,was on top of the list,me so after reading this it kind of,points to the person who's actually,interacting and on our profile the most,is actually the person who's gonna pop,up on the top,let's continue with the story so to,follow up this data,i created another account using a,different email address and stocked my,own original profile,every day said another reddit user i,watched all of my stories multiple times,and went right back to the beginning,of my profile but i didn't see anything,so it would appear like an anonymous,stalker,after three days of solidly checking my,original profile,my new account became the first one in,the view list,and dropped to the second when my,current top viewer had seen,the story so after reading the second,part of the story we have some empirical,evidence,that the first story is actually,factually true,now moving forward with this story it,gets pretty juicy,paige cohen who currently works in,communications at instagram and,previously worked in a senior position,at lyft in communications,kind of gave us a little bit of insight,into the way this actually works,she said similar to the feed stories are,ordered based on which moments you'll,care about most the order is determined,based on a number of signals,including the likelihood you'll be,interested in the content,timeliness of the posts and your,relationships to the person posting,the technology is powered by machine,learning which is adaptive,to your behavior and improves over time,so,given that this is powered by machine,learning we know that it's not perfect,but we also know,that with machine learning and,artificial intelligence,then we might actually be given,information and we really just dissect,this information we can get out of it,what we want but here's where it really,gets juicy because she added that,profile visits are considered,as well as likes and comments so this,actually confirms that the theory is,true and we don't know to what degree,it's true so if you actually want to,test this out i highly recommend testing,this out on your instagram followers,yourself so now that we know who views,your instagram whether it's your profile,and your stories we've got all the,information figured out,make sure you guys test this out for,yourself they,don't want to miss with stories,you can give your followers a behind the,scenes look at your life beyond the,polished face of your brand,additionally you can create fun,interactive content,that keeps them coming back for more,part of instagram stories appeal for,users is being able to see,who is viewing and interacting with,their stories not only can you see,who views your stories frame by frame,you can also study the analytics behind,your stories to see which ones,engage your audience and which ones,don't this provides you with valuable,insights into what content is working,with your stories,and what you might need to adjust why,does it matter who viewed my,instagram stories knowing who viewed,your instagram stories,means that you can see who your audience,is or who your clients audiences are,and what they're engaging with in your,stories feed beyond that you can see who,is engaging most frequently,what content they're watching from,beginning to end and what the,instagram app,stories viewer lists are only visible,during the 24 hours that a story is,visible then an additional 24 hours,afterwards this means viewer lists,and view counts are only available for,48 hours total so if you want to know,exactly who sees your stories,you'll need to keep a close eye on your,analytics in your accounts,daily to get to the viewer list from a,current story,simply tap into your instagram stories,and swipe up you'll immediately see an,option to choose between your analytics,and your viewer list click the i icon,and you'll be able to see,your list of viewers at the top of your,screen you'll see that all your current,stories,are displayed horizontally you can tap,on each story to see viewer lists,making it easy to see who watched your,stories all the way through,and who dropped off if you leave the,insights screen up,you can swipe across then tap on the,other stories you're interested in,seeing,view accounts display on each thumbnail,as you select the when it comes to instagram stories,everyone knows they should be showing up,but they stress or obsess over what to,be posting and it drives them crazy so,in this video what i'm going to do is,share what you should be posting on your,instagram stories how you can improve,your instagram story views and why you,should actually care about using stories,to grow your brand presence and business,using instagram so this video it's all,about instagram stories and upping your,game so let's get right into it so first,i think it's really important to,differentiate what stories are versus,what they aren't you obviously know what,the feature is but what does it mean for,your account so many people come to me,and they say how can i use my stories to,grow my page and that's not what stories,are there for your stories are only,going to be seen by people that are,already following you so if you're,looking to use it as a tool for growth,you're using stories completely wrong,and in fact only about 10,of your following will even see your,stories and they're your top 10,of people who are most interested in,your content in the eyes of instagram so,these are your core people seeing your,stories in most cases which means you,should create content through that lens,these people want more of you they like,you they love your content and you,should understand that and create,through that lens and stories can be a,super powerful wave to really deepen,that relationship and there's a,progression of people finding you on,instagram it usually starts with people,finding some of your content and then,becoming a profile visitor and if they,like what they see they become a,follower and if you nurture them through,tools like stories they can become a,super fan and then in turn become a,super customer buying your products and,services and stories are one of the most,powerful ways to bring people along that,journey and make them feel really,connected to you so remember these are,your core people and you're creating for,them so what should you actually be,posting on your stories for these people,it should really be more of you and the,reasons why people followed you in the,first place these are your core people,so if they fall out to see your life,share more of behind the scenes and the,deeper reasons or things that go into,creating the content they already love,for me i make a ton of content about,social media and online marketing,strategy and what people want to see is,a lot of that but also what goes into,creating the content that helps them out,in the first place that brought them to,me sharing that whole story and what i,call the hero's journey behind that is a,really personal way for people to,connect with you really quickly and,stories are probably the most human,element when it comes to instagram and,you want to use it like that like you're,talking to your friends so when you're,talking to your stories try to be human,don't be a robot talk like you would to,your best friend people are going to,connect with you so much more so when,you're on a story share what you're,doing what are you working on what's the,content you're working on share the,behind the scenes it can almost be like,a reality show or the deeper workings,behind the more finished product that,shows up through your content so i,wouldn't overthink your stories i would,get more out there of sharing more,different kinds of things and then,monitor how your audience responds to,the different things that you're sharing,one of the most powerful things about,stories is that any time that you push,one out there people can respond to that,story with the dm so if you post,something that really resonates with,people you're going to see that by,people's responses so get out there and,try sharing different things and see,what people want to see or the different,kinds of things they want to see some,examples could be your daily routine,behind the scenes what you're currently,thinking about your opinion on a,specific subject your diet the things,that you love your story what you're,eating your favorite shows hobbies etc,you can really go so broad here but,really focus on what they want to see,and it's more of you or the personality,behind the content that they love and we,want your followers engaging with your,stories to create a relationship and a,two-way conversation so you need to do,everything that you can to make that,conversation starter as easy as possible,so you want to be using all the tools,that instagram gives to you so while,you're sharing your day and what you're,doing also make it about the person,who's seeing this and make it easy for,them to get involved through polls,stickers sliders be creative with all,the tools instagram gives you to start a,conversation and keep it going over time,it's gonna do wonders for people feeling,appreciated when you give them that,opportunity to connect with you,one-on-one through your story plus a,massive thing to consider here is that,instagram a
