About this Fig Pizza Recipe

It feels like an injustice to compare this recipe to authentic Italian Pizza, but I can imagine taking a bite of this Prosciutto and Fig Pizza on a little outdoor patio, waterside on a quaint little street in Venice. True Italian pizza from a mom ‘n pop pizzeria cannot be beat, but the flavors in this pizza are a culinary experience.

The crispy, salty prosciutto paired with three different types of cheese spread across the fig jam base creates a sweet, salty, savory, umami mouthful that is quite phenomenal.

Make this Fig ProsciuttoPizza for a Friday night date-night in. It feels so fancy, and sophisticated but comes together in just 20 minutes. Paired with a glass of your favorite red wine and it’ll become a gourmet experience.

  • Pillsbury Pizza Crust - Pre-made dough that’s quick and easy to make is so convenient. See FAQs below for other crust options, too.
  • Fig Jam - This will be our pizza sauce instead of using a tomato base. Fig preserves are totally fine, too.
  • Mozzarella, white cheddar, and parmesan cheese - A variety of different cheeses adds a variety of flavors and textures. Use more of what you like, and less of what you don’t (but, I don’t discriminate in the cheese department).
  • Prosciutto - A salty, cured meat full of flavor. We will cook the prosciutto a bit on the stove top so it’s nice and crispy on the pizza.
  • Fig Balsamic Glaze - I used a fig infused balsamic vinegar glaze purchased at Kroger - the Private Selection brand. Regular balsamic can be substituted should you not be able to find this.

How to Make This Fig Prosciutto Pizza Recipe

1. First, roll out uncooked, pre-made pizza dough from the container and prepare according to instructions. Most of them will require pre-baking before adding the toppings. Place on a large baking sheet or preheated pizza stone if you have one. Brush the crust with egg white wash and salt + black pepper (or other seasoning of choice).

Pro Tip

Use a well-floured surface to roll out the dough to avoid sticking and use a rimless baking sheet to put the crust on for easier removal once your pizza is finished!

2. While the crust is baking, heat a skillet to medium heat. Add strips of prosciutto to the pan and allow it to crisp for 2-3 minutes on each side or until lightly fried (no need to grease the pan, the prosciutto is plenty fatty and it shouldn’t stick).

3. Once the pizza crust has completed its initial baking, spread fig jam evenly across the center in a thin layer - leaving about ½ inch around the border of the pizza. Drizzle olive oil in a circular fashion over top.

4. Then, rip small pieces of mozzarella cheese from the ball and scatter on the pizza. Add white cheddar cheese on the pizza, too. Then top with crispy prosciutto. Sprinkle half of the parmesan on top of the prosciutto.

5. Add 2 tablespoons of the fig balsamic glaze to the pizza (again in a circular fashion). Bake for the remaining time the packaged crust calls for.

6. Five minutes prior to the pizza being done, remove it and add the arugula, salt + pepper, red pepper flakes, remaining parmesan, and balsamic glaze and return to the oven.

7. Once pizza is finished cooking, remove it from the oven, garnish with slices of fresh figs, more fresh arugula (if desired). Slice and enjoy hot!

How to store and reheat prosciutto and fig pizza?

Store leftovers wrapped in tinfoil in the fridge for up to 5 days. You can also freeze for up to three months, but leave off the arugula until you’re ready to enjoy.
To reheat this Prosciutto and Fig Pizza, heat the oven to 300°F and allow the cheese to melt again. It’s significantly better than the microwave and allows the crust to still have a good crunch. Using a toaster oven is another great option.

Crust recommendations and suggestions

I used a pre-made, store-bought pizza dough (Pillsbury to be specific) for my pizza base, which was quite delicious and quite easy to prepare. You’ve got plenty of crust options, however, so use whatever is your favorite. When is Fig Season?

Fig season is a very short few weeks of the year, usually end of August to early October. There's nothing like fresh figs, so if you can find them in your local grocery stores, take advantage!
However, if you can’t find fresh fig, don’t count out this Prosciutto and Fig Pizza. The fresh figs are only for garnish and can be left out without sacrificing any flavor.
If you’re looking for a replacement, the flavors in this recipe would also pair well with peaches, pears, or blackberries. Don’t choose a fruit with too much water content, as this’ll result in a soggy crust.

What other toppings do you suggest?

This white pizza would be fabulous with caramelized onions, crumbles of goat cheese, fresh mozzarella, fresh basil or some sort of nut on top like toasted pine nuts or candied walnuts. Go crazy! The amount of toppings is up to you!
