Fill up your car this month, because in a few weeks, Australia will go from cheaper than average to pricier than average - compared to the rest of the world.

A litre of Octane 95 will cost you $1.62 a litre in Australia, cheaper than the global average of $1.96, according to price aggregator globalpetrolprices.com.

But there's other countries where you could fill up your car with only a few silver coins.

But here are the countries where petrol is most expensive and the cheapest.

At $3.25 a litre, Norway is the ninth most expensive country to fill up.

Not that it bothers many Norwegians.

The country has more electric cars per capita than anywhere else in the world.

Central African Republic

The Central African Republic is the fourth most expensive place to fill up your car.

This is largely due to the civil war going on in the country, which makes imports a risky, and therefore expensive, proposition.

Iceland

Iceland may be one of the most stunning and interesting countries on Earth, but it's also one of the priciest.

Petrol, like a lot of other stuff in Iceland, needs to be imported, and its isolated position in the chilly North Atlantic doesn't make things cheaper.

A litre of petrol there is $3.32 a litre.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe's petrol prices are the second most expensive in the world.

The southern Africa country has to import all of its petrol, and exchange rates make for brutal prices at the bowser.

For a litre, it'll cost you $3.65.

That price, though, is limited by the government subsidy. Every Iranian adult gets 15 litres a month at that price. Anything more than that costs 60c a litre.

People who don't own a car can sell their petrol subsidy coupon.

Venezuela

Venezuela is the cheapest country on Earth to fill up your car.

There a litre of petrol is just three cents.

Though there's good reason for this.

Venezuela is an oil-rich socialist country with heavy sanctions placed on it by Western countries.

Consequently, they are working with a restricted global market with which to sell their oil.

And with 90 per cent of the nation in poverty and hyperinflation making their currency largely worthless, filling up a car for cheap isn't much consolation.
