The AKS-74U is the extremely short carbine variant of the AK-74. Like its parent weapon, it is chambered in the smaller 5.45×39mm cartridge, but also has a slightly higher cyclic rate due to its shortened piston stock. This combined with its shortened barrel and lighter weight makes it not particularly accurate at longer ranges, However it is extremely handy in a pinch, particularly in close quarter battle situations.
~ In-game description

The AKS-74U is a carbine featured in Squad.

Gameplay

  • The AKS-74U magazine holds 30 rounds or 45 rounds, depending on the variant.
  • Can be fired on semi-automatic and automatic.
  • When the AKS-74U is equipped by a Lead Crewman or Lead Pilot, every 4th round is a tracer round.
  • The sights for the AKS-74U include iron sights only.
    • The iron sight allows the user to zero the rifle for different ranges (from 100m to 400m).
  • Arguably one of the weaker carbines in-game. Compared with other carbines, the AKS-74U has lower damage, a shorter effective range, slower muzzle velocity, and a below-average bullet dispersion performance at 5 MOA.
    • Most carbines in-game have exact same damage model and ballistic performance as their rifle counterpart; however, this is not the case for the AKS-74U.
    • The 702 rounds per minute rate of fire is in the middle of the pack for an automatic weapon, and it has balanced performance across close and medium range.
      • Automatic fire is very controllable in short bursts. This makes it very effective at close range.
  • AKS-74U is classified in-game as Carbine. Short rifles and Carbines are well-balanced in handling.
    • They output regular suppression effects, are relatively easy to point fire, and are effective at all ranges.
    • Though AKS-74U has a worse damage model and ballistic performance than its rifle counterpart, they have the exact handling characteristics in-game.

History

The AKS-74U is a carbine variant of the AK-74. It was designed in 1979 to create a standard carbine for the Soviet Army. The firearm uses 5.45x39mm cartridges, just like its parent. It served as the standard carbine and personal defense weapon (PDW) of the Soviet Army from 1979 to 1991 and is still used by the Russian Ground Forces from 1991 to the present.

Trivia

  • The abbreviation AK from AKS-74U stands for Avtomat Kalashnikova (Автомат Калашникова), which means in English from Russian, "Kalashnikov automatic rifle". 74 stands for the year the AKS-74U's parent, the AK-74, was designed, which was 1974. The S in AKS-74U stands for Skladnoy (складной), which means 'foldable' in Russian. This is due to the AKS-74U's folding buttstock. The U in AKS-74U stands for Ukorochenniy (укороченный), which means 'shortened' in Russian.

FAQs

Is the AKS-74U reliable? ›

The AKS-74U is a select fire rifle with a cyclic rate of fire of 650 to 735 rpm. Although the sights have a range adjustment to 500 meters, the practical range is about 200 meters. The AKS-74U works well, but is not as reliable in adverse conditions as full size Kalashnikov rifles.

Why is the AKS-74U called Krinkov? ›

In the United States, the AKS-74U is often called a "Krinkov". The origin of this term is uncertain. A hypothesis was circulating that the name came from the Mujahideen who supposedly had captured a high-ranking Soviet officer armed with an AKS-74U, and that they had named it after him.

Is Galil more reliable than AK? ›

The Galil is more accurate than the AK47 or the AKM because it shoots 5:56x45 Nato ammo and the fit and finish of the barrels is very good. Also the 5:56x45 is often more accurate in semi auto rifles than the 7:62 x39. Why use a rifle that isn't an AK-47?
