The roundabout 'clock' rule - Jennifer's Driving School (2024)

To help with deciding which lane to choose on approach to a roundabout you can use the ‘clock’ rule. Imagine the roundabout that you are approaching is like a clock and you are approaching it from the 6 o’clock position. On approach to the roundabout have a look at the road sign showing the layout and exits of the roundabout. Generally speaking, if the exit you need to take is at 12 o’clock (straight ahead) or before, you would choose the left hand lane on approach to and on the roundabout. If your exit is at 1 o’clock or after, you would choose the right hand lane.

The exceptions are spiral roundabouts (road signs and marking will tell you which lane to choose), and roundabouts where road markings tell you to take a certain lane (for example some smaller roundabouts instruct you to choose the right hand lane on approach to go straight ahead).

The driving lessons in Bournemouth that you have with Jennifer’s Driving school will include all the local test area roundabouts.
