How does Top Charts work? Top Charts relies on technology from the Knowledge Graph to identify when searches seem to be about specific people, places, and things. Top Charts builds on our efforts to help you find the information you're really looking for.

The numbers next to the search terms at the top of the graph are sums, or totals. A line trending downward means that a search term's relative popularity is decreasing—not necessarily that the total number of searches for that term is decreasing, but that its popularity compared to other searches is shrinking.

A value of 100 is the peak popularity for the term, while a value of 50 means that the term is half as popular. A score of 0 means there was not enough data for this term (or there could be no search at all!). References: Understanding Google Data. FAQ Google Trends data.

Google Trends doesn't show actual search volume numbers. Instead, they're providing a relative scale. A measurement of 0 means no interest and 100 means max popularity. For example, a measure of 25 would mean the term had one-quarter of the search volume on that date compared to its peak popularity.

Understanding the percent increase in a search topic can be a useful way to understand how much rise in interest there is in a topic. This percent increase is based on a topic's growth in search interest over a distinct period of time compared to the previous period.

If you're using Trends to search for a word that has multiple meanings, you can filter your results to a certain category to get data for the right version of the word. For example, if you search for “jaguar,” you can add a category to indicate if you mean the animal or the car manufacturer.
